Definitions for "Mufflers"
A term from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to describe the bandages or crude gloves used by the prize-fighting academies of the time. Gentlemen were encouraged to settle their duels not with pistols but by boxing and wrapped their hands in order to avoid the cuts and bruises they would receive. John Broughton is credited with introducing them in his school in London in the 1740s.
