Metalhead is a popular term for a devoted fan of heavy metal music and is often used interchangeably with the term "headbanger" or hesher. Headbanger is the older term, dating back to 1968 when it was coined to describe a group of fans violently banging their heads against a crowd barrier at a Led Zeppelin concert. Since the early 1990s however, the use of the term has declined in favour of the more fashionable "metalhead" tag.
