Definitions for "Media Gateway Controller"
An MGC is the overall controller function of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) gateway. It receives and mediates call-signaling information between the PacketCable(tm) and the PSTN domains, and it maintains and controls the overall call state for all calls.
Media gateway controllers (MGCs) or "softswitches" are the foundation for next-generation networks - offering the intelligence and reliability of the circuit-switched network with the speed and economy of the packet-switched network. As such, they must economically support both existing voice services like CLASS 4/5 features and evolving applications such as integrated access, VPN, Internet call waiting, click to dial, unified messaging, and enhanced roaming.
