Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua. Situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua, at , the city was made the national capital in 1857; previously the capital had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. The city has a population of about 1,380,100, predominantly Spanish-speaking Whites and Mestizos.

Managua is a department in Nicaragua. It covers an area of 3,672 km² and has a population of 1,380,300 (2005 census). The capital is the city of Managua.
