This is a computer that transfers mail between different mail systems. It works out where importnat bits of the message such as the subject, author and recipient are, and translates it into the format required by the other system. There are mail gateways between LAN mail systems and the internet which uses SMTP. They are also at your your access provider, where mail is stored for you, and sends it to you when you connect.
