Klephts (Greek κλÎφτης, pl. κλÎφτες - kleftis, kleftes, "thieves") were nationalistic bandits and warlike mountain folk who lived in the Greek countryside when Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire. They were generally men who were fleeing vendettas or taxes, debts and reprisals from Ottoman officials . They raided other travellers and isolated settlements.
