Kavanah is the "attention", "focus", "intensity", and "directedness of the heart" with which prayer is ideally approached. A person who prays with kavanah fills his/her words with the full depth of concern and intention about their meaning. (The opposite extreme would be rote recitation of written prayers without thinking about what one is saying.) See Kavanah.
