Short for "internet service provider". Can include local dial-in access providers, national access providers such as America Online and Netcom, and increasing numbers of telecommunications firms such as AT&T, MCI, and Sprint. These large providers can often offer individual dial-in access as well as high-capacity lines for resale to other consumer on-line services.

Consumer users typically access the system by modem through phone lines, though other technologies may be used. The ISP supplies users with access software, a user name and password, and usually has the right to terminate access privileges for abuses such as spamming.
