Hydroxyzine (IPA: [haɪ ˈdrɔks ɪ zin]) is a non-barbiturate piperazine derivative, used as an antihistamine for the treatment of iches and irritations, an antiemetic for the reduction of nausea, and as an anxiolytic for the treatment of anxiety, namely general anxiety disorderRxList, et al. (2004). It can also be used as an adjunct to pre- and post-operative medication and it also possesses a weak analgesic effect. In newer variations, such as vistaril, compounds are hydroxyzine pamoate based compounds, whereas older pre-existing compounds such as atarax, are more hydroxyzine based.
