The common black, or dark green or brown, variety of amphibole. (See Amphibole.) It belongs to the aluminous division of the species, and is also characterized by its containing considerable iron. Also used as a general term to include the whole species.
A variety of the amphibole mineral group.
The most common variety of the amphibole group of minerals. A silicate containing iron and magnesium of complex composition.
Hornblende - A monoclinic, dark green to black silicate of calcium and magnesium.
A member of the amphibole group of minerals
a green to black mineral of the amphibole group; consists of silicates of calcium and sodium and magnesium and iron
A dark green to black silicate mineral containing iron and magnesium; in rock, hornblende is generally distinguished from biotite by the elongate shape of its crystals compared to the flat crystals of biotite.
A group of minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, and aluminum silicates.
A complex hydrous silicate of calcium, magnesium, and iron which occurs as crystals in the lavas of Montserrat.
NaCa(Mg,Fe,Al)(Al,Si) 22(OH). The most common member of the amphibole family of minerals. It is found in both igneous and metamorphic rocks. See also the field guide entry for hornblende.
A black or dark-green mineral that forms needle-shaped or fibrous crystals; it is the most common member of the amphibole group and occurs in both igneous and metamorphic rocks.
A rock forming amphibole group mineral which forms part of the mafic component of igneous rocks.
a common black, dark-green or brown silicate mineral containing aluminum and varying proportions of calcium, magnesium and iron. Hornblende is a species of amphibole which is found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks. [AHDOS
Hornblende is a complex inosilicate series of minerals. Hornblende is not a recognized mineral, in its own right but the name is used as a general or field term, to refer to a dark amphibole. It is an isomorphous mixture of three molecules; a calcium-iron-magnesium silicate, an aluminium-iron-magnesium silicate and an iron-magnesium silicate.
