Also known as philology, it is the study of language change. The discipline involves following the developments in a language from it's earliest form to the present, as opposed to comparative linguistics, which uses modern evidence to reconstruct the earlier forms of the language. Together, historical linguistics and comparative linguistics cover all forms of dichronic language study.
