FUNDAEC (often incorrectly pronounced "fundy-ack") stands for "Fundación par la Applicacion y Ensenanza de las Ciencias," or, in English, "Foundation for the Application and Teaching of the Sciences." Popular usage of this term often refers to the series of university-level courses developed by FUNDAEC and used as a form of distance education to promote the development of intellectual and spiritual characteristics needed for effective social action. FUNDAEC, the acronym in Spanish for “The Foundation for the Application and Teaching of the Sciences”, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that focusses on training and development in the rural areas of Colombia and other countries in Latin America. It was created in 1974 in Colombia by a group of scientists and professionals led by Farzam Arbab, a renowned physicist who had arrived as a visiting professor to the Universidad del Valle in 1970.
