The major city on the island of Kyushu with a population of almost 1.5 million people. It was founded in 1600 when Kuroda Nagamasa chose it as the site of his new castle. On April 1, 1889, Fukuoka, the samurai town, merged with Hakata, the merchant town, and several smaller villages to form the city of 'Fukuoka'.
