This term refers to animals (usually poultry, and the eggs that they produce) that are not confined, meaning that these animals are able to go outdoors to engage in natural behaviors. System of (mainly) poultry keeping in which hens are allowed to range over a relatively large area
This term usually refers to poultry that is not confined - i.e, able to go outdoors. It does not necessarily mean that the animal was raised without antibiotics or under cruelty-free circumstances. The use of the term "free range" is only defined by the USDA for poultry production, and need only mean that the bird has had some access to the outdoors each day - USDA considers five minutes of open-air access each day to be adequate. There are also no stipulations for the cleanliness of the area. The use of this term for beef or eggs is unregulated.
To allow chickens to roam a yard or pasture at will.
Free range is a method of farming husbandry where the animals are permitted to roam freely instead of being contained in any manner. The principle is to allow the animals as much freedom as possible, to live out their instinctual behaviours in a reasonably natural way, regardless of whether or not they are eventually killed for meat. One of the many uses of free range animals is for some rudimentary insect population control in the free range area.
