This an INCO term and explains what the price quoted represents and the responsibility of the buyer and seller in relation to arranging for the various costs associated (e.g. insurance) with the shipment. It is normally used in road transport but can also be used for a combination of transport methods but can also be used for a combination of transport methods when the goods are to be collected by the buyer at the seller's premises. It usually covers the cost of the goods only.
The price that the seller quotes applies only at the point of origin. The buyer takes possession of the shipment at the point of origin and bears all costs and risks associated with transporting the goods to the destination.
Shipping term included in a contract of sale (abbreviated as EXW) meaning that the seller fulfills his obligation to deliver when he has made the goods available at his premises ( i.e., works, factory, warehouse, etc.) to the buyer. In particular, he is not responsible for loading the goods for export, unless otherwise agreed. The buyer bears all costs and risks involved in taking the goods from the seller's premises to the desired destination.
Ex Works ( named place ) means that the seller fulfills his obligation to deliver when he has made the goods available to the buyer at his premises. He is not responsible under this term for loading the goods on the vehicle provided by the buyer or for clearing the goods through customs for export, unless otherwise agreed.
The price quoted applies only at the point of origin and the seller agrees to place the goods at the disposal of the buyer at the specified place on the date or within the period fixed. All other charges are for the account of the buyer.
"Ex works" means that the seller fulfils his obligation to deliver when he has made the goods available at his premises (i.e. works, factory, warehouse, etc.) to the buyer. In particular, he is not responsible for loading the goods on the vehicle provided by the buyer or for clearing the goods for export, unless otherwise agreed. The buyer bears all costs and risks involved in taking the goods from the seller's premises to the desired destination. This term thus represents the minimum obligation for the seller. This term should not be used when the buyer cannot carry out directly or indirectly the export formalities. In such circumstances, the FCA term should be used.
This is the minimum level of responsibility for an exporter. You agree only to make the goods available to the buyer at your plant or office. The buyer may even be responsible for loading the goods on a vehicle. The buyer bears all responsibility for taking the goods from that point.
