Definitions for "Doumbek"
A goblet-shaped drum of Middle Eastern origin. Many different styles of drums are referred to as "doumbeks."
A goblet shaped drum of approximately 10" x 20" played with the hands while held on one thigh or alternatively between the knees. Most are made of clay or aluminum. This is the primary drum played from Greece, through the Balkans, Turkey, Iran, Arabia, and across North Africa. It has many variant names: darbuka / darabuka (Morocco), doumbek (Armenia, current US usage), tarambuke (Balkans), tombak / tonbak / zarb (Persia), darbuka / darabuka / dumbelek (Turkey), tabla (Arabia), derbekkeh (Lebanon), toumbeleki (Greece).
