a plebeian communistic current of the English revolution, in the 1640s; along with the True Levellers of Winstanley, it acted as a left wing of the radical democratic Levellers' movement. ( Note by MIA: The True Levellers was another name for the movement called the Diggers.)
Group that gave away food and clothes in Haight-Asbury. They followed the anti-materialist teachings of the English Diggers who fought against private ownership of land and property.
The Diggers were a radical community-action group of Improv actors operating from 1966-68, based in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. Their politics were such that they have sometimes been categorized as "left-wing." More accurately, they were "community anarchists" who blended a desire for freedom with a consciousness of the community in which they lived.
