like polymyositis, dermatomyositis is a connective tissue disease, and is characterised by muscle weakness, stiffness and pain, but is also accompanied by a rash, making the skin turn red or violet.
A disorder of unknown cause, characterized by inflammatory changes in the skin and muscle. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease, but this is not clear as yet. Can be found at any age, with peaks before puberty and around age 40. Rash, often confined to the face, is followed by weakness in muscles that are often tender and achy. Treatment protocols often utilize steroids such as prednisone.
The Condition"...Treatment and Prevention The first line of treatment for dermatomyositis is restricted activity and a daily injection of a corticosteroid, such as prednisone, to reduce inflammation and relieve pain..."
(Skin and muscle) Systemic connective disease causing inflammation of both skin and muscles.
inflammatory condition affecting the skin and proximal muscles, which can be associated with an underlying malignancy (see Paraneoplastic syndrome, Chapter 46)
The Condition"...Involvement of the striated muscle of the pharynx and upper portion of the esophagus leads to dysphagia and regurgitation..."
A connective tissue disorder in which a rash and muscle inflammation are the predominant features.
The Condition"...He or she will also take a small sample of tissue from the affected muscle (a muscle biopsy), to check for abnormalities..."

Muscle inflammation (skin rashes may also occur - hence the "dermato" - part of the term).
An autoimmune disease that causes rash, muscle inflammation and weakness.
The Condition"...Arthritis is common, as is Raynaud's phenomenon; others include systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome..."
A chronic inflammatory disease of muscle which is associated with patches of slightly raised reddish or scaly rash. The rash can be on the bridge of the nose, around the eyes, or on sun-exposed areas of the neck and chest. Classically, however, it is over the knuckles. ( See polymyositis).
One of a group of acquired muscle diseases called inflammatory myopathies. Characterized by a short and relatively severe onset, with patchy, bluish-purple rashes and muscle weakness. Some patients develop bumps of hardened calcium deposits under the skin. Muscle weakness is the most common symptom; others include fatigue, weight loss, discomfort, and low-grade fever.[77
A rare autoimmune disease that causes patchy red rashes around the knuckles, eyes, and other parts of the body along with chronic inflammation of the muscles. It may occur along with other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus.
a disease which affects skin and muscle tissue
a type of rheumatic disease in which the blood vessels under the skin and muscles are inflamed, causing damage to the muscle tissue.
a rate disease in which the muscles and skin become inflamed; muscles become weak, stiff, and painful
The Condition"...Weakness of the laryngeal musculature is responsible for dysphonia..."
A diffuse connective tissue disease.
The Condition"... Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also helpful in revealing muscle inflammation..."
The Condition"...As the disease progresses, the muscles begin to waste away (atrophy) and permanently shorten ( contracture)..."
Dermatomyositis is connective-tissue disease that is characterized by inflammation of the muscles and the skin. Its cause is unknown, but it may result from either a viral infection or an autoimmune reaction. Up to 50% of the cases may be a paraneoplastic phenomenon, indicating the presence of cancer.
