a small genus of perennial tuberous herbs of the arum family, of tropical Asia and the Pacific islands, including the taro (Colocasia esculente).
Another name for it is Jerusalem artichokes. It is a herbaceous plant with thick tuber containing much starch and cultivated for food for many centuries. Cooking the leaves destroys the acrid crystals of calcium oxalate found in all parts of the plant.
Colocasia is a genus of six to eight species of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical Polynesia and southeastern Asia (Wagner, Herbst, and Sohmer, 1999). Common names include Taro, and colloquially, "Elephant-ear", this name also used for some other large-leaved genera in the Araceae, notably Xanthosoma and Caladium.
