An error that occurs as metal folds over itself during the forging process. A cold shut commonly occurs where the vertical and horizontal surfaces meet.
An area in metal where two portions of the metal in either a molten or plastic condition have come together but have failed to unite into an integral mass.
Lines on the surface of a casting that are the by-product of the incomplete fusion of metal streams.
(1) A linear discontinuity in a cast surface caused when meeting streams of metal fail to merge prior to solidification. (2) A forging defect developed by metal flowing into a section from two directions, resulting in a discontinuity at the junction.
A discontinuity that appears on the surface of cast metal as a result of two streams of liquid metal meeting and failing to unite. On a forging, a portion of the surface that is separated by oxide from the main body of the metal. See Lap.
A surface imperfection due to unsatisfactory fusion of metal.
