Section 46b-86 (b), known as the ‘cohabitation statute,' provides in pertinent part that a court may ‘modify such judgment and suspend, reduce or terminate the payment of periodic alimony upon a showing that the party receiving the periodic alimony is living with another person under circumstances which the court finds should result in the modification . . . of alimony because the living arrangements cause such a change of circumstances as to alter the financial needs of that party.'” D'Ascanio v. D'Ascanio, 237 Conn. 481, 485-486(1996).

(also called 'de facto relationship'): A couple living together in a consensual union when not legally married to each other (that is, when not in a registered marriage). The trends outlined here are restricted to heterosexual relationships.
Living with someone of the opposite sex. Usually we use this term when talking about someone who is divorced and who has since begun living with someone of the opposite sex.
The act of living with someone, generally if sex is shared. In Minnesota cohabitation is not generally grounds for termination of spousal maintenance.
Two people living together in a sexual/committed relationship who have not legally married or entered into a civil partnership are cohabiting: legally, they are referred to as cohabitants. Prior to the Civil Partnership Act 2004, mixed-sex couples had rights as cohabitants that same-sex couples did not: in 2005, the rights and obligations of same-sex and mixed-sex cohabitants became exactly the same.
Two people living together outside of marriage. This can be grounds for termination of support in some states. (See your state section of divorce laws)
When two people are in a marriage-like relationship, but one that has not been "legalized" with a marriage license, they are said to be "cohabitating." In simple terms, this means "living together."
