Cardiff (English: Welsh:) is the capital and largest city of Wales. Located on the south coast of the country it is administered as a unitary authority. It was a small town until the early nineteenth century and came to prominence as a major port for the transport of coal following the arrival of industry in the region.

Cardiff was a parliamentary constituency centred on the city of Cardiff in South Wales which returned one Member of Parliament to the House of Commons from 1542 until it was abolished for the 1918 general election.

The Cardiff district was one of the two local government districts of South Glamorgan from 1974 to 1996. The district comprised the county borough of Cardiff and several surrounding parishes. Letters patent continuing the city status of the county borough were granted on April 1, 1974.London Gazette:issue 46255, 4 April 1974 The district was therefore styled the City of Cardiff.
