The Cajon (box) originates from the Andean mountain region of South America. It is basically a wooden box, and is played by sitting on top and rocking the bottom edge on & off the ground while hand drumming on the front. When the center is hit, it produces a broad deep tone which is projected from a hole in the back. Some cajons have a loose top front panel, which when played on the top edges give off a high pitch rattle to stimulate a snare sound.
