A surgical procedure to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes. When only one ovary is removed, the procedure is called unilateral oophorectomy. It may be done through a full abdominal incision or through smaller incisions with the aid of a laparoscope, a thin fiber optic camera used to visualize the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
