Definitions for "Arriccio"
In fresco painting, the preparatory plaster layer applied over a masonry wall surface. The arriccio is usually left with a rough texture, so that the final top layer adheres better.
The second rough layer of plaster placed on a surface that will be frescoed. This rough coat of plaster, when applied, goes on top of the arranata. This is also referred to as the brown coat.
This is the first course of plaster that the subsequent layer(s) of plaster are applied. There are differing opinions of how many layers of plaster there should be. We apply 2 layers of arriccio followed by the final intonaco
